- Breeding & Agriculture:
Since the big immigrations of the second half of the XIX century, the
vast extension of the "pampeana" prairie have been devoted to extensive
farming and cattle breeding, turning Argentina into the barn of the
world.
Fertile Soil:
Within the 190,000 square kilometers of Argentine arable land, the
world´s most fertile farmland can be found. Stretching from the semiarid
regions to the subtropical forests, the diversity of soils and climates
enables the harvesting of a great variety of crops, like cereals, oleaginous
and legumes, as well as the farming of the most diverse breeds of cattle.
Today Argentina is the world's largest exporter of beef and wheat.
The technology in agriculture and in the cattle production, which
has occured recently, turns the Argentine farm in one of the most profitable
of the world due to its relation price/production. This is due
to the insertion of Argentina in the global economy, which has reduced
the taxes over exports to the minimun, allowing the producers to sell
their products at international prices, reduced only for the freight
cost.
- Fishing :
With a 4,700 kilometer coastline, Argentina has an extensive maritime
zone of exclusive economic use. It is considered one of the best fishing
areas in the world. Within it, an abundance of valuable species can
be found, such as hake and squid. Aside from local fishing fleets and
through established agreements, fleets from Korea, Spain, Japan, Russia
and other nations fish in Argentine waters. In 1998, the total catch
yielded 1.12 million tons, of which 80% were for export.
- A free-market Economy:
Argentina is a free market economy. Deregulation and competition has
been extended even to sectors that in other countries are closed monopolies
or oligopolies, like electric power and telecommunications. International
financial transactions are irrestricted. Free enterprise is the engine
of the Argentine economy.
- Equal Treatment: In
Argentina, foreign and domestic owned companies are treated equally.
Under the law, they have access to all economic sectors and are eligible
for incentive programs and state procurement. Foreign investors do not
need to seek any kind of prior approval and are free to repatriate the
full amount of their capital and earnings at any time.
Foreign companies do not need to file any special register with the
government in order to operate in Argentina. Forming a company entails
the same procedures regardless of whether capital comes from a foreign
investor or a local one.
- An Educated Population:
Argentina has one
of the highest rates of university enrollment in the world. There are
over two million university-graduated professionals, resulting in a
well-educated and skilled labor force.
- Mercosur is the common
market formed by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay
as full members,
and Chile and Bolivia as associate members. Since 1995 full members
trade almost all items with no duties, and have established a common
external tariff scheme. Associate members enjoy trade preferences and
are gradually converging towards full member status.
- Quality of Life for Foreign
Executives: Argentina´s major cities are very safe by international
standards and enjoy the most cosmopolitan atmosphere in Latin America.
They offer a great variety of high-quality cultural activities such
as opera, ballet, concerts, plays, literary events and film festivals.
International schools offering foreign curricula teach in English, French,
German and Italian.
